Santa Fe to Estes, Colorado via Pueblo....12th/13th June 2014...

Hitched up and heading north on the I-25 and here's something we haven't seen for a few trips...trees !!!
Todays journey takes us over the mountains through vast plains, much of the landscape has pretty flowers making a beautiful purple haze and that's the song for today, Jimi Hendrix & Purple Haze...
Not a very colourful sign or very well placed !!!
We overnight at Pueblo, CO......Yorkieman's challenge for today was getting the rig through a low narrow "tunnel" under the I-25 that was 13' 3" and our hitched height is 13' 2" !!! Have to say we wish we hadn't bothered and stayed somewhere else as the campsite was much less than desired especially at the price they charged but when needs must !!
This is especially for Dave...cheers :)
Oh no a water-tower !!
The 199 mile drive today took longer than expected as the traffic through Denver was very heavy plus there had been an accident on the south side of the I-25......at times like this it's thank goodness for Walmart as we spotted one right on an interstate exit just as we were clearing Denver and we know they always have access for big rigs....a comfort stop/potty break was definitely needed !!
Now off the I-25 and headed west towards Lyons on CO 66 and then onto Estes.....there's snow on them there hills !!
The next challenge today is there is a detour at Lyons to get to Estes which takes us over a longer winding mountain route...as Yorkieman said this will be interesting !! In fact it was fine......35 or 40 MPH speed limit, lots of pull outs and scenic viewpoints.....perfect for our sandwich break.....

We are here at Elk Meadow Lodge & RV Park for 4 nights to visit  the Rocky Mountain National Park....
These little chaps were just outside our window.....they say that Elk often walk through the campsite but no sightings so far...
Morning coffee view from our site......
The song for our stay here is of course John Denver and Rocky Mountain High and we are high at 7,500 ft elevation and we will be going up to 12,000ft on our scenic drive through the park....

  1. Ahh! Smudger here! Back from Norway. Love the scenery appearing now, guess this is really cowboy country. So envious. Yorkieman now an old hand at all this winding road, low tunnel business - I think he could get a job driving rigs!! Enjoy, will keep watching. Love from A & M
