Iron Mountain Road & Mount Rushmore...5th July.....

A lovely sunrise, sorry no pics I wasn't quite awake enough....93F by 11.00 but not complaining at all....
Today's trip is through part of Custer State Park and The Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway a 66 mile double loop  through ponderosa pine forests, past granite spires and through rock walled tunnels....the part we drive today is The Iron Mountain Road...a fascinating narrow winding road up through these one lane rock tunnels.....
First glimpse of the Mount Rushmore Presidents from the Iron Road......
Seemed a tight fit but plenty of room for our boy......
Bradda Ed still shaking his booty pre traversing another tunnel.....

The Pigtail Bridges built in the 1920's.....a spiral road connecting the tunnels to "lift`' the road from one level to another without adding miles of road......
Incredible work of art started in 1927 and finished in 1941.....
Profile of Washington.....
And close up...amazing...dynamite blasts removed approx 450,000 tons of rock from the mountain....
And a walk in the sunshine around the town of Custer just a mile from our campsite and a nice little town with a bison statue on the corner of each block...
Our campsite.....plenty of room and very quiet....we can understand why Custer and his troops chose this valley to set up camp....
Camp Harris and flying the flag.....

Wow walking in the footsteps of General Custer!
Love the names, Iron Mountain Rd, Pigtail Bridges.
Mount Rushmore must have been impressive close up.
Take care in the heat. Keep flying the flag.

  2. Wow, this trip more than your others I'm really envious about (that's terrible English!), but the places you've seen , country, animals, etc. are just mindblowing, really fabulous part of the US. Photos all to normal high standard. All good here, sorry your man was beaten Sue, great match though. Keep on trucking and spare a thought for us workers!! Love to you both - A&M
