Medora to Billings, MT & Little Big Horn/Pompeys Pillar....15th & 16th July....

Today we are heading back west to Montana.......the campsite had an air line so we  were able to top up the trailer tyres before leaving........
We have noticed how busy the railroad is in these parts and all hauling coal .....mostly no horn sounded which in my opinion is a pity !!!
Our journey is all I-94......farming land, thousands of hay bales and corn fields with some "badlands" type rock formations but generally rolling hills and flat plains....
Our lunchtime sandwich stop....overlooking The Yellowstone River.....at one of the many rest areas....
A we approach Billings the sky darkens there was also a lot of lightening but I couldn't capture that, sadly !!  We did have a short sharp shower on route and by the time we got to the campsite it was another heavy downpour but again didn't last long...
Our tour today is down the I-90, 67 miles to Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument...
These marble markers and those in other photos are placed where the fallen soldiers remains were found...
There is now a very large military cemetery here,.......
This and next photo is of parts of the Indian Memorial...an interesting area and poignant.....

There is a 5 mile interpretive drive with a mile interpretive walk at the end ......
Although these horses roam free they are 'domesticated" horses belonging to The Crow Indians....
Very interesting, good views and information which enabled us to get a picture of the battle....

From Little Big Horn we head north-east to Pompeys Pillar....we had to come here due to our close ties to Portsmouth and to find out what it's all about.....well, as you may have guessed it's nothing to do with Portsmouth, UK but is a landmark  on the Lewis and Clark Trail.....Clark having arrived here in 1806 and seeing pictographs on the rock face carved his own signature, he named the rock after the son of Sacagawea who was an interpreter for him.......one of the minerals that Clark identified when exploring was coal, there are still large coal mining operations in Montana accounting for 25% of the nations coal production....
A Yellow Bellied Marmot
The Yellowstone River taken from the top of Pompeys Pillar.....boy it was a hot climb but great views...I missed it but Yorkieman saw a Bald Eagle in flight....
Another view from the top of Pompeys Pillar.....
And here it is...Pompeys Pillar...
We moved on yesterday to Missoula, MT it was an early alarm call today as a long drive although all I-90 and lots of rest areas...an odd thing at one rest area there were a lot of seagulls flying around....
This is a lovely campsite, great detail to plants and flowers as well as lots of space on each site.......we are planning a couple of days of chilling here before heading north to Glacier National Park where we shall be for a week....
I'm happy there is a hill at the back of our rig and the railroad runs along the top !!!....it's strange as it look like a model railroad from down here.....
Temperatures were mid to high 90's on arrival yesterday, slightly cooler today as there a "mist"/fog covering the sun caused by forest fires in Washington and Canada..... there is a large Smoke Jumpers Centre near here......
We hear UK is having a heat wave but thunderstorms forecast,.....we hope they don't spoil the weekend for you all......enjoy The Open....we have excellent coverage here on the campsite cable network....
More travel news soon from
The Happy Campers....
