Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway........Wednesday 30th July..

The beautiful  Columbia Gorge area with the river, the high cliffs and many high waterfalls....
It's a very popular area for visiting as there is easy access to the many small State Parks and waterfalls from the I-84....
The old road bridge......
Most of the falls can be viewed from the road but most like this one have trails to get part way up or to the top of the falls...
This is Bridal Veil Falls and although not showing up here very well we can see why it is called bridal veil....

A view of the Columbia River, interstate and railroad in close harmony....
One of the many old bridges on the old highway.....some of the old road and bridges were destroyed in the 1960's when  interstate 84 was built but there are still many that have been preserved...
The fabulous view from Crown Point Vista House built in 1917....
Yorkieman at the Crown Point Vista House.......
From the scenic highway we took the 14 mile road up to Larch Mountain to the Sherrard Viewpoint (4055ft elevation)
From here on a clear day you can see 5 mountains including Mount St Helen's 46 miles away, elevation 8363ft, this is the new height after the devastating eruption in 1980.....
Mt Rainier.....distance 97 miles, elevation 14410ft.....
Mt Adams...distance 54 miles....elevation 12307ft
Mt Hood....distance 22 miles....elevation 11235ft
We could just about see Mt Jefferson but it was hazy and unfortunately couldn't be seen in the photo I took....
This was a really stunning and beautiful spot, not too many folk make the drive up here, it was so peaceful for our lunch sandwich that is until 3 very loud families arrived and competed at who could outshout the others, have to say it was mainly the men...oh well we did enjoy a peaceful half hour !!!
Crown Point Vista taken from the Women's Forum Overlook on the scenic highway......
We've had a good stay in this scenic area...the campsite is one of our least favourite types as we are not good at living in the "twilight zone" our site is in a heavily wooded spot so very shady, we need to put the lights on during the day but some folks love it so we go with the flow...tomorrow we move back into the sun and head north to Hoodsport, Washington....
