Port Angeles,WA to Astoria, Oregon......Friday 8th August

Sorry for silence from the Travelling Brits, the internet was rather lacking at last site but onwards and upwards....
We've enjoyed our stay in Port Angeles but today we move on to Astoria in Oregon...we initially retrace our steps past Crescent Lake then head South on the 101 to Astoria....
A short section of the route is along the Pacific Coast but mostly the drive is through forested areas....
On the coast section good pull-outs to stop for coffee and cookie.....
The Astoria-Megler Bridge on highway 101...it stretches 4.1 miles across The Columbia River and contains the longest continuous three-span through-truss in the world !!....
When the bridge opened in August 1966 it not only connected Washington State with Oregon but also completed the US 101 as an unbroken link between the Canadian and Mexican borders....
It was initially a toll bridge to recoup the cost of building the bridge.....the toll was removed in December 1993 two years early as the bonds were paid off .....
Coming into the town of Astoria, Oregon...a nice town, a mix between hilly San Francisco and towns in New Hampshire and Maine......
Over the next couple of days we are looking forward to exploring Astoria and part of the 101 coastal road.
