Downtown Astoria.....Sunday 10th August....

And it's a clear beautiful blue sky morning and perfect for our  first stop of the day
at the Astoria Column....set high on Coxcomb Hill, 600 ft above Astoria the column opened in July 1926, it has a frieze of 22 significant events that occurred in the region......it is 125 ft in height with a spiral staircase of 164 steps and yes of course we went to the top....
Fabulous views from the parking area but even better up here.....this is looking back over the Youngs River towards our campsite.....
Looking over the mighty Columbia River Estuary to Washington State....
Astoria with the Astoria-Megler Bridge in the background....
Driving back to downtown Astoria, very San Francisco all the photo needed was a tram !!
We walk although there is a railroad/tram that runs alongside of the historic river walk, one and half miles to Pier 39  at the East Mooring Basin where there are at least 100 sea lions basking in the midday sun....fun to watch but really noisy in fact we could hear them when we were up at the column !! We are not surprised that the babies sometimes get crushed, they are huge and just come up out of the water and walk over each other to get their spot in the sun...
After our lunch salad watching the river flow past we head for the Sunday Farmers Market  for a few fresh supplies then finish our tour for today at the historic jail, now a film museum....
The Victorian Flavel House Museum...
Don't really know why this Douglas Fir is in Astoria as the sign didn't really give much info but it's very large 115 inches diameter and put here in 1937 !
A good day out...tomorrow we are exploring the coast road to Tillamook......
BFN
The Happy Campers....
