Chief Joseph Scenic Byway & Part of Beartooth Scenic Highway....3rd July

Today we drive 11 miles from Cody to take the very scenic Chief Joseph Highway.....
green rolling hills and valleys, lots of cattle/ranch lands.....
Apologies Ann &Dave in my reply to you yesterday I forgot to say about the trout, Michael has great vision for this sort of thing, I hadn't seen them.....he reads the road signs long before I can which makes my navigating somewhat late !!!
Up and over the mountain.......
7 switchbacks down to Clarks Fork Gorge...
Dead Indian Summit at 8,600 ft elevation....
It's a beautiful day but very hazy....some Adobe Elements required me thinks...
This fall/cascade was taken from the road at the bottom of a hill and flows into The Clarks Fork River.....in later pics you will see the earlier part of the waterfall/cascade up in the mountain on The Beartooth Scenic Highway....
We discover when we join the Beartooth Scenic Highway this is Pilot Peak....

A boardwalk brings us to the remains of an old smelting works for the gold/silver mines on Henderson Mountain..the waterfall at one time ran dry as the river was diverted into a dam to provide the power for the smelting works...over time the dam has collapsed and the river once again flows through the narrow gorge making a powerful waterfall...
This and next 2 photo are of our peaceful lunchtime spot.....The Clarks Fork River .......
There were some fascinating eddys on the bend in the river here....
After a sharp bend in the river the water cascades through this narrow gap.....
Today is about scenic views and waterfalls/cascades.....
At the end of the Chief Joseph Byway we join The Beartooth Scenic Highway and first stop is at this fantastic powerful waterfall..... this pic taken from the new road bridge looking back at the old one,  now a viewing platform...
Really powerful and mesmerising.....this one might juts be filling the empty photo frame on our waterfall  wall back in our static home....
As it flows downhill from the other side of the viewing platform....
An on down to the Shoshone River.....
We are now standing on the glacial sculptured Beartooth Uplift looking across at  the volcanic Absaroka mountain range....
We retrace our drive back along Chief Josephs.....I didn't manage to get a photo but in one area a family where rounding up their cattle in the "traditional way" on horseback...
A day at home tomorrow then we must say a fond farewell to Yellowstone and the surrounding areas ....we have had an amazing time here and urge you all to visit this spectacular area....we would love to come back in winter, obviously not in our home on wheels though.....
Our next stop will be overnighting in Buffalo then onto Custer, South Dakota....

  1. Hi Michael & Sue,
Like the location of your lunch stop. Hope you enjoyed your day at home, and your drive to Buffalo went well.
I was hoping to watch Andy Murray in the men's single finals today, but alas that went pear-shaped. I will content myself with a Guinness or two hopefully in the garden with something sizzling on the barbeque(with Ann keeping an eye on me).
    Enjoy keep on trucking.
    Cheers,
    Ann & Dave

  2. Drive over went well and now at Custer...post will be on soon.....
Sorry not a Murray fan at all....I'm very happy as my man Federer is in the final :) We're sure the Guinness in the garden fits the bill nicely....don't forget to pour Ann a glass of wine though...
Off on an 1880 train ride through the Black Hills today...
    Enjoy your afternoon
    M & S :)
