Rapid City 7th July & The Needles Highway 9th July....

Wow what a storm overnight....heavy rain, continual cloud to cloud lightening and continual thunder that sounded like a big "ole' train rumbling by and guess who left their shoes outside !! but they will soon dry out as the daytime temps go up to high 80's although we did get a heavy short shower just as we arrived in Rapid City.....
Update on the hail stone storm a few days ago.....Yorkieman checked the roof and one of the hail stones had punctured a small hole in the a/c covering......bring on the duck tape !!!
Rapid City, 40 miles from Custer is the largest town in the area, a neat town with it's main claim to fame being that on the corner of each block there is a life sized statue of a president of the USA....
JFK and John Jnr....
And of course Ronnie....
Ummm strange that we parked outside of a brew pub....The Firehouse Brewing Company....
We had ordered yesterday in Hill City a wooden sign for hanging up outside the rig when we park up...must remember it will be ready for collection on our way home....
Two days later (I shall post yesterday's trip to the Badlands after I have sifted through the many photos !) and we drive  back through the State Park to The Needles Highway another section of The Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. The 14 mile drive is a narrow winding road up and through a maze of granite formations with again 2 narrow one lane tunnels....
The first tunnel, this one 10 ft wide.....
Many pull-outs and viewpoints along the way to stop and admire the effects of the elements ....

Fascinating rock formations.....

And the 2nd tunnel this one only 8ft 4 wide......Yorkieman  decides he should stay in the truck this time to check the passenger side....the inside of the tunnels are uneven so have to be careful of the wing mirrors...

The "exit" (it is 2 way) of the tunnel and the top of the scenic road at the "Needles" area, great views , also a gathering point for the rock climbers....not our thing but whatever rocks your boat as they say...
The eye of The Needle....
And back down to Sylvan Lake...there are 26 miles of rivers in Custer State Park but no natural lakes they are all man made, this one was created in 1881 when a dam was built across Sunday Gulch....love these names...a nice mile walk around the lake to walk off our lunch sandwich....
A little turtle getting some sun....
Hadn't expected to see Longhorn cattle in this area....

This really is a lovely campsite, plenty of space......
Camp Harris......
This little chap is a Yellow-bellied Marmot.....
